What is the actual answer to 8 divided by 2 parentheses 2 plus 2 viral math problem

I keep seeing this on TikTok and Twitter and everyone argues in the comments. Please settle this once and for all:

8÷2(2+2)=?8 \div 2(2+2) = ?

Some people say its 1 because they do the parentheses first: 2(4)=82(4) = 8, then 8÷8=18 \div 8 = 1.

Others say its 16: 8÷2×4=168 \div 2 \times 4 = 16 working left to right after parentheses.

I learned PEMDAS but my friend says implicit multiplication is different. Whats the actual answer according to real mathematicians? Does the ÷\div symbol matter vs writing it as a fraction 82(2+2)\frac{8}{2(2+2)}?

no way its 16. i had straight As in math and my teacher said implied multiplication comes first.

that teacher is wrong. source: im a math professor. theres no such thing as "implied multiplication priority" in standard notation.

The correct answer is 16 if you follow standard modern convention, but the expression is deliberately written to be ambiguous. **Standard modern interpretation (used by mathematicians and most textbooks):** $8 \div 2(2+2)$ Step 1: Parentheses: $2+2 = 4$, giving $8 \div 2(4)$ Step 2: Multiplication and division have EQUAL precedence, evaluated LEFT to RIGHT: $8 \div 2 = 4$, then $4 \times 4 = 16$ **Why some people get 1:** They interpret $2(4)$ as "implicit multiplication" that has higher priority than explicit division. This was common in older textbooks and some physics conventions. **The real answer:** The expression is a deliberately ambiguous meme. In professional mathematics, we use fractions instead of the $\div$ symbol: $$\frac{8}{2(2+2)} = 1 \quad \text{vs} \quad \frac{8}{2}(2+2) = 16$$ The horizontal bar removes all ambiguity. This is why $\div$ is rarely used beyond elementary school.

yo i always thought it was 1 because of the parenthesis thing but i guess i was wrong??? my casio calculator says 1 but my phone says 16. what a world we live in i think the real lesson is to never write $\div$ and always use fractions. that way nobody gets confused
